Top Ten Whedon Characters

10. Rin says: Dr. Horrible

“Laundry day, see you there, under things, tumbling. Want to say, love your hair, here I go…mumbling.”

Sophy says: Yeah, so I haven’t seen this yet. I’m a bad, bad Whedon fan. Bad. But not as bad as Rin…

Rin says: Okay, I guess this is where I come out. It’s true, ladies and gentlemen. It’s true. I haven’t watched all of Angel. There, I said it. Now let’s just move on, and let me commentate the rest of this list in peace, okay? OKAY.

To be honest, picking Dr. Horrible was more a shout-out to the whole series as a whole, not just the character…even though this made me love NPH like a mofo. I think the greatest thing about the sing-along-blog was that it got so much recognition (despite how small of a production it was) and whedon showed once more that he is a fucking genius. This wasn’t following Joss blindly wherever he goes (dollhouse), this was warranted because it really is that special.

09. Sophy says: Tara

“What do you see?” “Willow-hand…”

Sophy says: What’s that? Tara’s boring and irrelevant and how could I possibly have her in a top ten? Hi your face, meet my fist. (Don’t worry it won’t hurt very much, I have the arms of a meek little girly girl.) But seriously, as much as it pained me to exclude so many other characters, I had to have Tara in this. I think that straight men (lol, yes, yes, I know, I know) often get overlooked, particularly in a show like Buffy which is filled with colourful characters, with super powers and wicked senses of humour and such. Tara doesn’t really have any of that glamour – she’s funny, sure, but in a quiet, shy, geeky way, and she may be a witch, but she’s well and truly in Willow’s shadow there. But see she’s the balance, and she balances damn well. I adored the way she was the only one who gave Dawn the stability she needed, the way she was always there for Buffy, too; their subtle connection, foreshadowed all the way back in Restless, is one of the loveliest parts of the show. And then there’s Willow/Tara. She managed to make me love it more than Willow/Oz, which I didn’t think would be possible. In short, she’s extraordinary in all her soothing ordinariness, and I was fucking traumatized in the best possible way when she caught that bullet. Skins could learn a lot from Tara’s death, actually. Her storylilne, in many ways, is Freddie’s gone right.

Rin says: Strong like a fucking amazon.

08. Rin says: Mal

“I don’t believe there’s a power in the ‘verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful. Sometimes you just wanna duct tape her mouth and dump her in the hold for a month.”

Sophy says: Ooh, look at Rin, being all multi-show. Attention-seeker. I love Mal too. Just not enough for a top ten. If I’d picked anyone from Firefly it would probably have been Kaylee. ♥

Rin says: I am not being an attention-seeker… WHAT, DID YOU WANT ME TO PICK SOMEONE FROM DOLLHOUSE? I adore Firefly AND Serenity.. I couldn’t not pick someone from that area, and I couldn’t not pick MAL. I love NF so much (I LOVE CASTLE OMGOMG) and Mal was an awesome hero. A REAL HERO. Kaylee was a very close second. Very very close.

07. Sophy says: Illyria

“Wesley’s dead. I’m feeling grief for him. I can’t seem to control it. I wish to do more violence.”

Sophy says: Let’s get one thing clear. I loved Fred. I loved Fred a whole lot. I would never have dreamed that I could love the thing that crawled inside her body and slowly and agonizingly murdered her even more. But such is the brilliance of the writing for this character, of her complex and wrenching relationship with Wesley, of Amy Acker’s phenomenal acting, for which it is a fucking crime that she was not nominated. I will never forget the end of Shells. Ever. Wesley? I apologize for leaving you off this list. I hate myself for it a bit.

Sophy says: Rin, you are missing out. I mean it.

06. Rin says: Giles

“And I shall be wearing pink taffeta, as chenille will not go with my complexion.”

Sophy says: Oh Giles. I loved you so much up until you turned into a fucking scab in season seven and distracted Buffy while you tried to get Spike killed. Right up until that moment. Yeah. Wizard hat will never, ever, ever, not be funny. In fact, I think it needs its corresponding Buffy cap:

Rin says: Just look at that Wizard outfit. JUST LOOK. Like…come on. And this moment from Helpless is one of my favourites. Giles will always be the father Buffy never had.

05. Sophy says: Spike

“There’s a hole in the world… Feels like we ought to have known.”

Sophy says: Wow, so… I have a lot of trouble with Spike being fifth. Like… I sort of feel like I’m choking. If I had my way he would have been second only to Buffy. Rin, why do you hate Spike me???? I feel like I don’t even need to talk about Spike. Or like I can’t? Because I just love him that much? No really, I think my head would explode if I tried to document Spike’s awesomeness. And I like having a head, so yeah. I’ll just say this: if you come in here and say “Spike was great but only when he was evil in season two” I will look down on you. And Rin will too, just because I asked her to. Right Rin?

Rin says: I will always follow you blindly into battle. Also, THIS IS WHERE YOU’RE WRONG SOPHY. I don’t hate Spike, and I have never hated Spike. I LIKE SPIKE. The, ‘you make me feel like a man…and that..’ LIKE HELLO. I adore that. It’s just my Buffy/Angel heart getting in the way, I AM VERY AWARE OF THAT.

04. Rophy says: Faith

“Faith, these are innocent people.” “No such animal.”

Sophy says: Ah, Faith. I once saw a list similar to this which listed Kendra above you. Yeah, I know. Not five by five. Not five by five at all.

Rin says: JHAHAAH OMG THAT LIST THAT LISTED KENDRA, HAHAHAH I DIE. I JUST DIE. Faith. Eliza Dushku, one role that you will never top and you just shouldn’t try.

03. Rophy says: Angel

“They talk about me in the chatty rooms?”

Sophy says: I love Angel. I may have serious, serious issues with him being higher on this list than Spike, but I would want him on it. I was as in love with him as the next girl when he was on Buffy, but honestly, it’s only once he got onto his own show that I started to see him as a great character. Also, he got the best ending of any character ever. But I’d trade it to see him again, yes I would. Also, CHATTY ROOMS.

Rin says: ANGELLLLLL. It’s kind of odd how much I loved him, but then I never got past season 1 of Angel. (Although I think I’ve seen most of season 5… I’m so confused) ANYWAY. Tortured vampire with a soul, what’s not to love? And this is where I have to say…Twilight gtfo.

Sophy says: Guess I know what I’m buying Rin for her birthday:

02. Rophy says: Anya

“I have finesse! I have finesse coming out of my bottom.”

Sophy says: For me she is absolutely hands down the funniest thing in the Whedonverse. And that’s a big call. And then on top of that she has brought me to tears several times. Really, I almost went insane limiting myself to four caps and one quote. Almost every moment Emma Caulfield was onscreen was pure gold and I am so upset that we haven’t seen more of her post-Buffy. Also, at least 3 Emmy winners need to mail her their trophies. STAT.

Rin says: AESOHJGIJGSPLHGNSRIPD HNAIP. Full of contradictions, and still so so so easy to love. One of the most charming characters tv has ever seen.

01. Rophy says: Buffy

“I walk. I talk. I shop. I sneeze. I’m gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back. There’s trees in the desert since you moved out and I don’t sleep on a bed of bones. Now give me back my friends.”

Sophy says: Well, like, duh. Come on. The only person who competes is Spike and somehow he’s down at number 5 *grumbles* Anyway, Buffy is just… Buffy. And that’s why she gets 8 caps where others get 4. Oh Buffy. I will just never ever ever not love you. My love for you is so strong that it made me hate just about every other character in the show in one scene in season seven. FUCKERS, HOW DARE YOU KICK BUFFY OUT OF HER OWN HOUSE. /rage blackout.

Okay. I’m back. Buffy broke my heart a thousand different ways. She’s the first television character I truly related to, who made me think about my own life and my own heart and my own mind just by being who she was. She is Joss Whedon’s greatest achievement, and it’s hard to see how he could ever top her. And yeah, she’s Sarah Michelle Gellar’s greatest achievement too, and that is why I will always love her, no matter how lame she is!

Rin says: This is it, ladies and gentlemen. The greatest character tv will ever see. (Amends hair and all.)

So that’s it, folks, Rophy’s top ten Whedon characters. They were damn hard to choose, because let’s face it, the guy is a bit of a genius. Think we made foolish selections? Do you feel the same as if we’d just put JJ into a top Skins characters list instead of Cassie? Really? That insulted and horrified????! Then tell us where you think we went wrong, and feel free to use caps and exclamation points and ones and elevens while you’re at it. Rophy loves a little hysteria.

And hey, let’s play a game. 10 Rophy points for each time you can tell us the dialogue that goes with a scene. Let’s be clear though, Rophy points can so rarely be exchanged for goods and/or services.

I agree! I love joss whedon, great list!!! Minus Tara, she just gave me the shits no end!! So winey and annoying! haha. Also hated Dawn. And Riley. All the other characters though, love em!

I loved Anya SFM. I was so sad when they killed her off in the finale. I always hoped that her and Pirate!Xander would take their interlocking parts and get back together after yet another Apocalypse. Anyway, I approve of this list. I think the only way I wouldn’t is if you had Harmony up there.

And yeah, it’s almost hard to find a genuinely crappy character in the Whedonverse. He’s just that special.

          lol I love Riley. I DO :((

I mean, I always knew he wouldn’t be the one for Buffy, that was glaringly obvious from the start… but that’s kind of what made their story poignant to me. It was her attempt at normalcy and nice, and all it did in the end was turn her normal, nice guy into an insecure vamp-feeder freak. So sad.

I think the bit that gets me with Riley is his whole speech to Xander about how amazing Buffy is… “Buffy’s like nobody else in the world… but she doesn’t love me.” And then she comes in and kisses him like everything is fine and normal normal normal. But it’s not and it never will be. And he knows it by then. He knows he’s not enough and ow, ow.

i get that buffy kinda HAS to be #1 but anya will always be my fave…she just brought everything any scene needed…when it was too heavy she always brought the lols…but she could also make me cry like a fat kid who dropped their ice-cream…and her breakdown in willow’s dorm room in ‘the body’ is one of my fave tv scene’s ever…just *sigh* brilliant…and her ep in season seven, ‘selfless’ is story-telling and acting genius…olympic gold winning awesome…

also, “I have finesse! I have finesse coming out of my bottom.” totally inspired me to include the word bottom more in my everyday conversation when i first saw it because it just sounds so cute when she says it…but i’m not going to lie, it created problems at work…i discovered that there are many instances in which using the word ‘bottom’ is inappropriate… :/

and i can only support spike pre-season 6 being on the list…because *lowers head in preparation for getting yelled at by spuffy fans* i can’t stand the i’m-so-in-love-with-buffy-so-i’m-going-to-try-to-rape-her-then-feel-so-guilty-i’m-going-to-ride-off-into-the-night-being-all-emo-trying-to-get-my-soul-back-spike…i feel like he lost his balls somewhere in season five, but he was still a little bit hardcore…then in season six he just got soft…and i get it, i do -storywise and all that…but yeah…i have attraction issues with bad boys…*shrugs* i can’t help it…season two spike is epic…plus i’m a buffy/angel shipper since 1997 (man i feel old) so i hate anyone getting up in that bizniz…riley? HATE…douchebag parker? HATE…cute but ultimately damned-by-the-gods ben? HATE…any other challenger to the buffy/angel epic romance? H A T E !!

and no willow? i don’t know about that…nerdy willow, witchy willow, evil veiny willow…all awesome….the fact that she says ‘cutie-patootie’ alone should earn a spot!

but THANK JEBUS xander is not on the list! because i hate that self-righteous ass…thats right i said it…i’m a buffy nerd and i hate xander…it’s out there now…i feel better about it…

i’m going to stop now…if i don’t stop myself rambling when it comes to buffy i’ll be up all night…

We are with you on Anya, we truly are. ♥

lol Buffy/Spike was the first ship I shipped like a fucking maniac. It’s what brought me into ~the fandom. So yeah. Not agreeing. I will give you season 7 Spike though. As much as I still adored him, he’s probably my least favourite incarnation of the character, and I believed then and still believe now that giving him a soul was a bad move.

LOL I LOVED RILEY. LOL. NO REALLY. *huddles*

With you on Xander… I did love him at times, but he could be such a twat. Still haven’t fully recovered from “Just so you can get your boyfriend back.”

Willow was a favourite up until season 7. “Buffy? Sweet girl, not that bright”. No, thank you self-absorbed bitchy Willow. No. Thank you.

I mean, I totally love Anya, but I probably wouldn’t put her that high on my favorite Whedon character list. There were points when she would kind of annoy me, but then I’d love her again. But there are really just so many other amazing characters, so she really isn’t that high on my list. I mean, no offense.

I still don’t get the Spike love. I never did. He was fun, up to a point. But besides Marti Noxon (grr), the ham-fisted Buffy/Spike relationship was the force that did more than anything else to completely wreck the last two seasons; the moment it became obvious that the relationship was going to be treated as a serious thing – the end of S5’s Crush – was… well, the phrase “jump the shark” is thrown around very frivolously these days, but that’s not going to stop me throwing it around again. Spike can DIAF. Especially when his inclusion comes at the expense of Whedon’s most human creation, the all-seeing Alexander Lavelle Harris, which is tantamount to including Michelle in such a Skins list instead of Effy.

    Also, Box!Sophia = APPROVE.

Fantastic list. I’m so glad Anya was #2 because she will never get all the appreciation she deserves, and she deserves a lot.

Faith, Spike, Giles, Illyrai–all great choices and Buffy definitely deserves the number 1 spot. She was the first character I ever really identified with too. I think Xander deserves to be on the list for a lot of the same reasons as Tara though, he was the one solid force in the Scoobies for all seven seasons.

I’m a little sad at the lack of Dollhouse love, but I agree that there are few characters on that show that achieved the same amount of awesomeness as the ones on this list.

    1. Sophy
      Sophy at · Reply

I’d agree with you on Xander, except that, like Willow, I think he wound up being kind of self-absorbed toward the end. And I also have a hard time repressing “You just want to forget all about Miss Calendar so you can get your boyfriend back.”

      Yeah, no. Just… no.

I think the thing with Dollhouse is that Joss shows are often a slow burn… it took till the end of season 2 for Buffy to become HOMG!SHE’SBUFFY in my eyes.

Omg i have so much to say about this list so i’ll try to calm down and squeeze in as much as possible without writing a whole page :p
first, i think u guys hold the pieces to my soul (as in soulmates) cuz u put Dr. Horrible, Tara, Mal, Giles, and Anya in, which i doubt any other would (put all of them -together- in a list of just 10 characters).
Now that i’ve let that out i have to agree that Illyria and Wesley do compete on that spot cuz they both did an amazing transformation, that only joss can pull off, from geeky sidekicks to awesome tough bastards (plus a romance with Lilah never hurt ;).

How come no Cordelia?? for me she could even come instead of Angel, again, for managing to turn from a funny side-dish to this amazing strong woman that only those who actually followed the show understood how she and angel could ever fall in love – another joss geniusity there.
And as for Willow.. really?? i would like to know what are your excuses for leaving her out! she’s like the other main character besides buffy!! it’s not that i don’t love Faith, i really do, but my main reason for loving faith has been fanfics which developed her storyline way more than the show ever did. so that’s the faith i have in mind but in the actual show she wasn’t ALL that compared to other characters who didn’t end up on the list.. so yeah.. WILLOW!!

    That’s it. i’m done :)
oh that Sophia bit, LOL! oh and is that shirt real? cuz then i NEED to buy one!! where do i get it???

and p.s. – Kaylee fucking RULES! i think if we would have gotten some more firefly her character would def get on ;) but on the other hand pretty much EVERY character on firfly was spot on and amazing! i mean Jayne?? or friggin’ River?!?!?!?! aww summer how i miss thou :'<

We enjoy having pieces of your soul! They’re in a lovely glass jar, along with some leaves Naomi put in there.

YEAH LILAH. Damn she was awesome.

I think the problem Rophy has with Cordy is that she became TOO strong and TOO special. They kind of tipped her into Mary Sue territory with the whole champion thing :(

And Willow… truly, we adored her… up until season 7. In season 7 she mostly left me cold.

River would have been my second Firefly choice ♥

      1. anat
        anat at · Reply

Yeah i totally agree on everything u said (i must since u are holding hostage pieces of my soul), i did love Cordy the most while she was just a poor girl burdened with this power she could not control. but cordy in “heaven” and then evil cordy was just awful! yet u have to admit the best epi on season 5 was when cordy came back for a min (only to break our hearts again).

and ok Willow past Tara was kinda blah.. even thu she did have some lovely cute-old-Willow moments even in season 7. in general I didn’t like season 7 much cuz there were way too many characters, they lost the core scoobies chemistry – much like in grey’s anatomy season 5 (season 6 is back to totally ChristMer bff awesomeness thu). but it had some amazing stand alone episodes (such as Anya’s, Andrew’s, and the Willow/Tara-killer-which i shall not name [cuz i have shitty memory really and won’t bother trying and/or blocked & repressed])

AWWWWWW. yeknow, i really didn’t think dawn was TERRIBLE. they had to write her in somehow since she was such an enigma in the comics. well … actually i don’t know chronologically when that was written in terms of when season 5 came out so i don’t know. it was an interesting way to bring a new character in, though. riley though… I MIGHT BE JUDGING YOU A BIT SOPHY.

Dawn did give me the shits at times, yeah. But a lot of the characters did so eh. I’m rpetty sure the comics were after the show ended??? I don’t know. I didn’t know about any comics with Dawn before she hit our screens. I guess why I love Dawn is not so much for who she was as what she represented. Ingenuity on Joss’s part in the way he brought her in and sent us all reeling… and then because she set up my favourite season and my absolute favourite episode of the show, The Gift. Amaze.

I get what you’re saying about Spike and the attempted rape. It’s not so much that it’s logically unforgivable, given the soul issue but… it’s a difficult thing to get past emotionally. I’m not going to pretend I liked it, and as much as I continued to love Spike and Buffy/Spike afterward, it was never quite the same for me as it was leading up to that point. So yeah… I do get what you mean.

Oh gawwwd, I was watching earlier seasons and I felt so sad at not being able to include Willow. Because I really did love her through thick and thin up until somewhere in season 7 when she just seemed to come to represent everything she didn’t stand for up until that point. I wanted her to grow to love herself and become a strong, brilliant woman, I really did. But I feel like somewhere along the line the scale tipped, and she just became self-absorbed and sort of bitchy. The ‘Buffy? Sweet girl, not that bright’ to Kennedy might have been the final straw for me.

Not so sure about Buffy though. Don’t hate me, but, sometimes, just sometimes, don’t you think she got a little bit, IDK, self-important? And before you start yelling, I know that she was the chosen one and she alone can stop the vampyrs (hehe, I just reminded myself of Andrew talking about ‘The slayer of the Vampyres’, hehe, Andrew…) and all that jazz, but, although I certainly don’t condone it, you can see why they all got sick of her and threw her out in S7. Plus, throwing her out gave birth to one of the greatest throwaway lines in the Whedonverse (IMO) : “You got any Tab?”

Changing the subject, if you were going to put one of the characters from Dollhouse on this list, it should be Dr Saunders. Awesome character.

    Nice list!

I wanted to see River Tam there, she was so awesome and complex, the way she just switched roles and “took care” of her brother at the end of the movie just killed me.

Anya was such a great character, and that part on The Body where she doesn’t understand so very well done.
I will never forget just how much she loved money, she even had a dance for it. The Dance of Capitalist Superiority

Ohhh Faith, yes yes yes. . . . . . is it bad that a large part of my heart ships crossover, ‘cross the pond, pedophilic Cook/Faith? Because it does. . . :/
    Great list :)

    Hey guys,

My friend just showed me your blog and I have to say, I’m impressed. I’m more impressed now that she sent me this link. Awesome list.

It’s interesting to me that so many people are so gung ho about Anya, yet nobody seems to care as much for Cordelia who served essentially the same role in seasons 1-3. I’m rewatching Buffy with my housemate (WHO HASN’T SEEN IT!) and I think I forgot about the glory of her character because of how everything played out on Angel (and yes, I too haven’t seen all of Angel, although I did buy the box set because, duh, it was on sale). Her comedic timing is pretty amazing. Also, should we be at all curious about the fact that both of these characters dated Xander?

I agree with Sophy. Spike should be number 2. What amazes me about Spike is that I went from hating him (’cause he was the bad guy) to loving him so completely. He had such a way with words. The speeches he gave in Lover’s Walk, Fool for Love, and that one episode after they kick Buffy out in season seven:

    Spike: You’re the one Buffy.
Buffy: I don’t want to be the one.
Spike: I don’t want to be this good looking and athletic. We all have crosses to bear.

    Yes yes yes yes!
Although I very much disagree with the Spike and am a little sad at the lack of Willow.
Anyway, the point of this comment is to say please please please please write more Buffy or Whedon related articles. Buffy recaps would give me a happy.

No Willow? D: She was an integral part of Willow/Tara though! (And for hardcore W/T shippers, Willow in S7 doesn’t exist anyways. Fucking Kennedy >_>)

    This list is pretty accurate though. Buffy could grate on the nerves sometimes, but if you DIDN’T fall in love with her in S1 when she burst into the library and started ranting at Giles…then why the hell did you start watching the show? O.O;

Spike got wussy after he got the chip :P

Totally, totally agree with Faith. I shipped Bangel and Fuffy simultaneousnessly and if I read a love triangle thing with them I never knew who to support…

But about Faith being Eliza’s best role by FAR…have you seen Tru Calling? Cause even though that got canceled REALLY REALLY fast, she was actually pretty damn good in there. Which is good, cause if she decided not to do a Faith show for that and she SUCKED, I would probably hold a grudge forever.

    What about Willow? I honest to god love Willow more than any character because of how she’s changed over the course of the show and the love story to rock my world in the form of TWILLOW? I cried so hard when Tara died D;

    Seriously, the character who showed the most growth throughout Buffy would be Willow and how she became more and more comfortable in her own skin.. Just cklgjsklg;sdlnghsd;

I’ve been awake for several more hours than I should’ve but I’ll shut up now

    Love this list!

I’d add evil Willow (and by that I mean both Vampire Willow and Dark Willow!). Tara’s death was truly beautiful and the pain it caused for Willow made the season 6 finale really awesome to me! Just cause… who wouldn’t want skin the person who killed the love of your life??

And Sophy, I agree with you: I’d put Spike way higher in that list!!

Good list. I wouldn’t say I agree with, uh, most of it, but a good read. My list would be:

    10. Giles
    9. River
    8. Anya
    7. Cordelia
    6. Wesley
    5. Xander
    4. Dr. Horrible/Billy
    3. Mal
    2. Angel(us)
    1. Faith

I’m probably going to get my throat ripped out for this, but I think that Buffy is a greatly overrated character. I adore the idea that she represents, and yeah she has some truly awesome moments and some great quips, but I never really connected with her like I did with other characters. There were quite a few moments (coughthewholeofseasonsevenforexamplecough) where she really annoyed me, she often came across as very self-righteous, and I just didn’t find her anywhere near as interesting as the other characters.

Spike would totally be on my list if I could take seasons 2-5 Spike on his own (GTFO, rapey!Spike and whiny!Spike.)

AMENDS HAIR I’M CRYING. Because I know exactly what you’re talking about. Dying. Dead. Gone. But agreed on your assessment that she’s the greatest TV character. Bless.
