202 — Heavy Is The Head

YOUR FACE! YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACE!

FLOWER DRESSES!

Rin says: I was so happy to see her again, and so soon! There is still so much story to be told, and apparently it’s a lot JUCIER than we ever imagined.

More on that later.

Sophy says: I didn’t realize how attached I’d become to Raina until I bounced up and down a little when she appeared. It’s hard to bounce up and down from a lying position. But she and her flower dresses and general fabulous creeperness have earned the effort.

Pantless

May/Motorbike

Rin says: New OTP.

No lie. Like, can she ride it indoors to get from room to room? Can she fit it in her bed?

Sophy says: If she can’t she should just get a bigger bed.

WE’RE GOING TO NEED A BIGGER BED, MAY.

Best Reminder that Joss is back :’)

Everything to do with Fitz.

Rin says: Did you see how Skye had tears in her eyes when she talked with Fitz? THAT’S BASICALLY HOW I FEEL EVERY TIME HE’S ON SCREEN. God damnit Iain, why are you so good? It’s so heartbreaking to watch, and whilst I do think he will eventually get better, I see it happening in a way that means he won’t ever be the same. In a way, there was a part of Fitz that stayed in the box under the ocean that we’re never going to get back and I WHY WHY FUCK YOU WARD.

I thought I wouldn’t like the fake Fitz. I thought he was going to be a sloppy attempt at a replacement and then I realised what kind of show I was watching and how they WOULD NEVER EVEN TRY because they’re not stupid and this isn’t some kind of Glee. It turns out Fake Fitz is actually Mack, a character we should learn the name of and not try to write off as unimportant. They were smart by making Mack a true ally for Fitz, someone who didn’t treat him like he was going to break and could also help him in the tech department. It felt a little hopeless for Fitz without Simmons around, and that her choice to leave was the dumbest thing she’s ever done, but maybe there’s a chance she was right. We don’t know what things were like before Simmons left, but like we discussed previously, Fitz probably had outbursts of frustration at Simmons just like he had with imaginary Simmons. And although both of them know it isn’t Fitz’ fault, something like this can break friendships — even the strongest of friendships, EVEN THE ONES WHERE YOU SHARE A NAME. So I can see why Simmons left if she felt like he needed an outsider to be the one to help him get better.

Or maybe she’s a bit of a coward too.

I GUESS WE’LL SEE.

It also warmed my heart to see Skye and May watching on and being happy to see Fitz making a tiny bit of progress.

IT BROKE MY HEART WHEN MACK DISCUSSED SIMMONS LEAVING AND FITZ LOOKS ACROSS THE ROOM AND IMAGINES HIS SIMMONS SMILING BACK AT HIM.

Why does this show want to hurt us so bad.

Sophy says: Skye struggling to hold back tears watching Fitz killed me. Killed me. Because it really drove home for me that these people became a little family last season and now that has all been blown apart. And of course, Skye, especially, would have trouble coping with that, because that little family is everything she ever wanted and got and lost again.

BUT SHE CAN GET IT BACK. THEY CAN ALL GET IT BACK. WE JUST NEED SIMMONS TO COME HOME AND EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY. WHEN SHE IS BACK EVERYONE ELSE WILL BE BACK I CAN GUARANTEE IT. OKAY SURE, WARD WILL CONTINUE TO BE INSANE IN THE BASEMENT BUT I ACTUALLY LIKE HIM BETTER DOWN THERE SO IT’S ALL GOOD.

I don’t think Fitz will ever be the Fitz he was in season 1, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be this deeply unhappy and alone forever either. I mean, the Buffy of season 2 was never the Buffy of season 1 again. The Buffy of season 3 was never the Buffy of season 2. And so on and so forth. I expect there will be the same attention to detail here when it comes to the consequences of living – or dying – or kind of a bit of both.

I expected to dislike Mack. So much so that I’m pretty sure I did refer to him as ‘Stupid fake Fitz’ several times throughout and some ruder versions of that according to how agitated I was in the moment. But by the time he was earnestly telling those kids with their coats and clipboards to “beat it” because they “pissed [Fitz] off,” I was converted.

I think what makes Mack work is that he’s neither a Fake Fitz nor a Fake Simmons. He’s actually just a real person who’s relatively smart and very committed to getting results for the people he works for and with. Like he tells Fitz, he the kind of musician who needs sheet music. What Fitz had with Simmons? It was magic. It was something nobody on the outside could ever really understand. What he’s starting to have with Mack is something completely different and significantly more pedestrian.

Mack is a friend and coworker. Not a soulmate or a brain-twin. Not the half that makes him whole. Just someone who will make him talk and then listen. And then at the same time, someone who is less interested in his feelings than in the skills he can tell he still has. Like Rin says, Mack doesn’t treat Fitz like he’s going to break – like he was complaining to Imaginary Simmons last week that the others were doing. And it’s by not treating Fitz like he’s going to break that Mack distracts him from how broken he already is – practically tricks him into being himself again, at least when it comes to understanding and communicating the genius things that are going on in his own brain.

I think it will be very interesting to see Fitz navigate this relationship. It’s not that he hasn’t had friends and coworkers before – Skye was a friend and a coworker – Ward was too, and doesn’t that sting. But when he forged those connections he did so from a Fitzsimmons place. As in he was part of this tiny functioning unit – a supernaturally high-functioning unit, actually – and that meant that even if he and Simmons might appreciate or like or even love other people, they didn’t need them – because they didn’t need anything as long as they had each other.

But now Fitz needs a friend. And the irony is that someone like Skye isn’t able to be that for him, because she knows what he’s lost. She gets that Simmons was “a lot more than that” – a lot more than she could ever be, no matter how hard she tried. She gets how irreplaceable that relationship is for Fitz.

Mack doesn’t get it. He doesn’t know about Simmons and the way she was with Fitz. He doesn’t understand that Fitzsimmons isn’t even just a cute Brangelina type nickname but an actual accurate description of the two of them as people. And it’s because he doesn’t understand this – because he doesn’t understand what Fitz is going through – that he has to ask.

He asks Fitz about Simmons. And that’s what a friend does that Skye couldn’t do without crying all over everything.

THIS JUST IN I LOVE MACK REALLY A LOT HE CAN STAY FOREVER EVEN IF HE’S THE USELESS PART OF THE GROUP WHEN SIMMONS COMES BACK WE WILL CALL HIM XANDER FOR SHORT.

And yes, honestly, Fitz imagining Simmons across the room smiling at him when Mack asks how he’s coping with losing her? Wow, show. Honestly. Below the belt.

Rin says: OH ALSO I forgot to mention that I partially died when Simmons guided Fitz’ arms to hand over the results to Mack. 8-.

Best Reminder that Joss is LOL

“A phone number? What, is he lonely?”
“I doubt it. The guy is jacked. And he can turn any body part into any material.”
“Okay. Thank you for that.”
“Mm-hmm. Yeah.”
“Call the number.”

Rin says: Oh my GOD. This was perhaps the most hilarious thing that has ever happened. SKYE’S FACE. AND THE SOUNDS OF APPROVAL SHE MADE. Christ.

And to top it off, Coulson was perfect in his fatherly disgust. And how he just told her to go make the call so she would stop talking.

Sophy says: SKYE. SERIOUSLY. WHEN SHE GOES TO THESE PLACES SHE ISN’T EVEN SUBTLE ABOUT IT. SHE IS ALL CAPS. Poor Coulson. He’s all Stop that, I can still hear the smacking.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Cutest of the Scoobies

“Yes, we shall, Simmons. Yes, we shall.”

Rin says: It takes a special kind of show to be able to produce such cute from a character with sustained brain damage who is talking with his imaginary more-than-that-friend. PLUS THE HANDS ON HIPS WHILE WEARING CARDIGANS IS JUST CLASSIC FITZ.

Sophy says: A scene of adorable hijinks featuring a recently brain-damaged character and the hallucination of the character who abandoned him in his hour of need. It works.

&
“Aw hell no.”

Rin says: He’s the younger Black Giles.

Sophy says: LOL TRIP. You can stay.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Please sir, we’d like some more

“No, May, be honest. Is Coulson okay?”
“Of course.”
..
“What is wrong with you?”

Rin says: Probably one of the cutest segways ever. I love it when May is unintentionally funny.

It was also hilarious when they took the paperclip so seriously, there was a beautiful dramatic close up of it and everything and the focus pulled to reveal a grump child Coulson. HAAHHAAEHAE. Show 8-.

And then he has one of his ~episodes and I’m all, what? You’re too good for a marker and whiteboard? Or how about that AWESOME NEW COMPUTER you have stored away in a box? No? NO!? But I guess it just looks cooler if you etch it into a wall with a knife. But I love that May and Coulson are still close and that he hasn’t completely shut everyone out, try as he might. God all of the relationships on this show are the best.

WELL ACTUALLY THE LAST ONE, I DUNNO. This new guy who Sophy and I identified as ‘that guy from things’ looks to be the new villain. BUT ALSO SKYE’S FATHER?!?!?! DUH DUH DUH. Could it really be though? I’m not sure. Is it that simple? We get a hint from Ward about it in the previous episode and then he magically pops up in the next? I’m not so sure. MAYBE HE’S SIMMONS’ DAD? I don’t know. I won’t start any rumours. BUT MAYBE THAT’S WHY SIMMONS WAS SO RELUCTANT TO CALL HER PARENTS AFTER SHE ALMOST DIED AND LIKE, MAYBE THEY’RE HYDRA AND SHE WAS BORN BABY HYDRA?

Hysterical rumours are not my thing though.

Sophy says: I love a hysterical rumour :-?

The quick cut to May interrogating Coulson was amazing. That and May holding up the twisty paperclip injected some humour into what is a pretty serious situation. I mean when you’ve died and come back to life and start carving up the walls about it, that’s pretty serious. I mean, it’s like Rin says, if he was using a whiteboard like a normal person maybe there wouldn’t be so much to worry about.

I am freaking out at the idea that we may or may not have met Skye’s dad and he’s that guy from things. And I am also freaking out at the hint that maybe there was more to Garrett than just being, you know, Evil. Raina says he was enlightened, and sure, I’m going to take any and all things Raina says with a grain of salt, but I’m inclined to think she’s telling the truth when she says that Garrett was once where Coulson is now – full of alien juice and scratching shapes like nobody’s business. What I’m interested in is how all of that ties in with Garrett being Hydra and seemingly a cartoon villain played by Bill Paxton.

I loved that May sat and monitored Coulson while he worked. It was kind of funny seeing her just sitting there watching him, but also kind of moving in that it represents an intense intimacy that she still has with him no matter how remote he may appear to have become.

Head In H–OOOLY FUCK WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

Evil sexy hair Simmons?

Rin says: I don’t remember the last time I was this excited for the next episode of something. Maybe it was like this during the promo for 3×14 Glee… and that was big.

BUT HOOOOOOOLY CRAP. SIMMONS! WHAT ARE YOU EVEN SIMMONS!!!! I am so excited for her return, and that it’s not going to be a simple “I’m back!” Simmons has obviously been up to something during her time away, whether or not she’s actually Hydra? Well, I highly doubt it. But in any case, her motivation has to be Fitz and that gives me goosebumps. More than anything I want to know what’s going on inside Simmons’ head because of everything that has happened. Why she left, where her loyalties lie, how she feels about the work Shield does and was it worth it.

Plus it looks like Donnie is back which is kind of perfect since he was in our last S1 recap. :)

VAEOIDJPIAEJH;SDMD;HGNAPHNA;SMB;XM CAN IT BE NEXT WEEK.

She won’t be Hydra :-j

PLEASE DON’T BE BABY HYDRA.

She won’t be :-j This is obvious misdirection :-j She’ll always be loyal to the team :-j She doesn’t have an evil bone in her body :-j Unless it comes to protecting Fitz :-j

Sophy says: OKAY BUT. I have nothing to add to what Rin has said above apart from OKAY BUT.

And that I am so happy Donnie is back because he was awesome.

EXCEPT ALSO WAIT. YOU GUYS SIMMONS IN A HYDRA HOOD. I DON’T UNDERSTAND. ALSO SHE HAS SWISHY NORMAL PERSON HAIR. AND I DON’T SEE ANY TIES LET ALONE IN THE SAME FABRIC AS HER SHIRT I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON. AND SHE HAS A GUN AND IS POINTING IT HELP HELP BUT SERIOUSLY SHE CAN’T BE HYDRA BUT ALSO I WOULD SORT OF BE OKAY WITH IT IF SHE WAS BUT QUINN IS NOT GOING TO STAND AROUND AND LET RACHEL RUIN HER LIFE BY MARRYING FINN HUDSON SHUT UP YOU KNOW NOTHING JOHN SNOW

Oh my GOD I KNOW = my response to this whole recap. Can barely talk about any of it without using all caps. “Bad girl” Simmons, from that scene where she and Skye were breaking into some Shield database thing (remember those happy days??!) was funny and cute, but actual (maybe) evil Simmons is just……..help. I can’t. She’s both the sexiest most amazing most bad-ass thing ever, but also so tragic BUT ALSO she’s obvs infiltrating to fix Fitz’s brain w some crazy Kree juice of some sort but also a little bit that’s an excuse and she’s scared and sad and it feels better to have a purpose than to sit around next to Fitz and tell him “it’s ok, be patient,” when he can’t think of words.
    …help.

It was a great week with people talking to someone whom is gone. Would’ve been great if Fitz had continued to make his own world work again – that he improved a little bit by bit, but kept on hallucinating Simmons as a way to function and be helpful and that was his fate for now (Fitzsimmons and Mitz scenes were my favorite scenes of the episode and season) But – I, too, think Simmons is just undercover (either gone rogue or on a double secret mission from Coulson) to infiltrate Hydra and to get some tech or medicine to restore Fitz. Though, I would be totally okay with it (even prefer it) if Simmons had just lost her way and got recruited by Hydra, but just wanted some bloody revenge instead and gone semi dark in the process. There have been a bunch of dark stuff on the shield, so fingers crossed for them not being done with darkness.

Skye’s dad is an alien from outer space, right?
